Return- Algernon Cadwallader

So I suck and don't update my blog anymore cause all I do is go to summer classes and go to shows, resulting in endless commutes that go late into the night. In other news my life is groundhog day minus me being able to use the internet. Buuuut with all this commute time I'm able to listen to shit tons of music, ALL THE TIME. So it isn't terrible. But one band in particular keeps me sanity afloat now along with a couple of others (that I'll end up posting now) but this one is an awesome band from Philly that most people should know if you read this but if not, here they are for you. Algernon Cadwallader besides being a band with a very odd name from a book I haven't read yet, is a not only an awesome band but a band that puts you in the best fucking mood. It's like the American Football except in reverse where the mood is good shits going to happen and I like the summer mood. They are in the whole Snowing, Monument, Grown Up's scene and are a very happy go luck band. Also their band Halfway to Holland is pretty solid. Very good listen and I say essential for you to check them out, especially if you like to party. Word.

New Writer! Rawley's Review: Homeboy Sandman- The Good Sun

Whaddup kids, now I know this blog doesn’t usually focus on rap, but here’s a little change for you. In order for this to work, you’re going to have to do one thing. Disregard any judgments you have about hip-hop while listening to Homeboy Sandman. Unlike the indie/punk/ambient/hardcore/thrash/ whateverthefuck genres that make up rock, in hip-hop we have mainstream and underground. Welcome to the underground. Homeboy Sandman is a dope MC out of Queens, and The Good Sun is his latest album. This CD is a total breath of fresh air. Homeboy Sandman has solid flow, creative lyrics, but mostly importantly, tons of style. It’s great to listen to a rapper who could care less what he’s wearing or how much money he has. All Homeboy Sandman cares about is rapping, and it shows in The Golden Sun. He raps about things other people would never consider hip-hop. “Angels with Dirty Faces” is about the homeless people he sees in NYC every day.
“Imagine you was dying nobody helped you/
Say nobody listened you might talk to yourself too/
Turning up your nose holding your nose gonna puke/
Church all in the front row fill up the whole pew/
Fronting like it’s God’s word but that yall goin do/
Some of them ain’t got shoes, guess that’s your cue”
The beats are smooth and creative (he’s even got live drums, a miracle in hip-hop nowadays), although the album doesn’t have the cleanest production. But this is the underground remember, and we don’t give a fuck how clean the vocals are. Finally, just give Homeboy Sandman a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

The Sidekicks- Sam 7"

Saturday night lock-in's are rad. But so is the Sidekicks 7incher Sam. First off I can't really remember how I got my hands on this, like most 7" but looking back I feel a friend of mine suggested it to me saying its the best of the Sidekicks stuff. He wasn't kidding. This 7" is really uplifting along with how its pretty fast paced in keeping your interest, and shows a reason why people flipped out about this like Against Me! in 2001 after Reinventing Axl Rose. Okay mabye not to that extent. But a lot of people digged this so it must be good right? Well if you can't take everyones word this album was able to put me back into place with my head back on again. Well enough with sentimental value, the lyrical value is awesome and is pretty honest and passionate which is always a plus. Like the opening song Hop on a Sea Cow and Manatee Up in the last part he say's " I can make reasons for my unreasonable sureness/ I can make predesigned phrases sound so earnest", I think is a really cool line and not just because I was able to write it down here, so eat it unseen panel of hipster judges. The Sidekicks are an Ohio based band but will be touring around the West Coast with Tigers Jaw and are currently touring around the East Coast, Hopefully hitting up D.C., But this band will remind you of Latterman (or Shorebirds a.k.a. Latterman pt.2), O Pioneers! and mabye a lil bit of Cheap Girls. But thats just me. Give them a spin and a gander, they got 2 other albums out so have fun.

Everyone Everywhere

So I stumbled on this band a couple of days ago, and now because of how solid this album I'm now ravenously going on music binge. Anyways these guys are really solid. Everyone Everywhere is a Indie/ "Emo" band from Philly. These guys sound a lot like straight up 90's emo bands like Promise Ring or any band that had to do with Tim Kinsella. These guys sound a lot like that along with Castevet and Grown Up's kinda deal. They have a very jammish feel to them with midwest emo elements ringing through their songs along with having some sing along parts and being fairly melodic which in my opinion is a really good mix. Their new self titled CD that came out recently has all of these present along with a nice track after track feel, where you just cant listen to that one song you like because it just flows together really well. They are also a pretty rad band to listen to when traveling around in nice weather.

Baader Brains

Uhh yeahhh, so by the looks of things I kinda have been a lazy and busy so my bad for not updating this for a bit. But on the flip-side and the only one that really matters in this case I have been listening to Baader Brains lately, and other than being a clever knock off name of a D.C. hardcore/ reggae superstars, they are a band that rips hard while kinda being trippy and have probably more radical ideals then Bad Brains. Baader Brains is a hardcore band that are part of this fictional radical group called The Young Tigers and its kinda based off the Baader-Mienhoff/Red Army Faction shinanigans of 1970' and 1980's which used alot of radical and sometimes violent tactics. It's interesting stuff, look it up. These guys like to do concert themes about this. But back to the point the album I've been listening to by them, and really the only one I know off, The Complete Unfinished Works Of The Young Tigers, is a really tight and trippy album mixing nice hardcore punk elements, with a combo of trippy audio clips and other sorts of tunes packed in along with some dialogue. Also its a concept album around a revolutionary movement of... well the Young Tigers, which I think is really cool and entertaining. But I highly recommend taking a look and listen to these guys, so have fun with the album.

Summer Mix

So I just started getting back into trying to see more shows in my area so with this I kinda haven't been around to update anything. At all. So I thought I would do a post on some of the bands I've been listening to lately. First off I feel kinda lame for not getting the new Good Luck ep sooner, kinda feel like the last one to have heard of there release(especially its a pay what you want release). But Good Luck is a really awesome band from Bloomington,Indiana that plays really happy pop punk that normally will at least make you smirk the first time you give them a listen. Or at least that happened to me. I won't guarantee it. Point is though these guys play real happy music that is really addicting to listen to, and pretty honest in its lyrics. Along with the pop punk binge I have been on I was able to see Lemuria last Thursday. That was a good show. Along with Lemuria I got to see some local DCHC bands such as Sick Fix, Isla, and Transgression which was a tight show. Too bad the fire marshall shut it down and Torche had to be moved else where. Anyways, Lemuria is an Indie/Punk/ Powerpop band (says myspace) that has recently been gaining attention for these kids just got signed onto Bridge 9 records. This band hails from Buffalo New York and will be touring alot this summer with bands like Polar Bear Club, the Carrier, Cloak/Dagger, and Moving mountains. They're a tight heart felt band thats got plenty of catchy tunes. Also the new Max Levine Ensemble ep came out, which really wasn't that new at all since it turns out I had the tape all along and never put two and two together.

Max Levine Ensemble

So its about 80 degrees out and with humidity your face should be melted off by now. Its summer in the D.C. metropolitan area again so that basically means ska, pop punk, biking to wherever the fuck you need to go, and basement shows where your cloths melt off. Add these all together with more DIY ideals and being goofy and positive and you get The Max Levine Ensemble. This band reigning in from D.C. is an awesome pop punk/ ska band to listen too when your trying to just have a rad jam during the summer or bummed out about those you go to high school( or work with). It's fronted by folk punk singer Spoonboy, which can easily be told by his vocals and lyrics. Not only they are just rad jams but they are an awesome band to see live being pretty high energy and when you see them their more about having fun and not doing the whole flannel cross armed waltz around the small space you already got. I got the chance to see these guys last year with BTMI!, Good Luck, and Control which was a rad concert not only cause the line up just killed to begin with but also it was the first concert I started getting into the whole DIY ideals shindig. But back to the point, they are a generally fun band to see live and listen to so check them out, look out for their new EP coming out at the end of May called Them Steadily Depressing, Low Down Mind Messing , Post Modern Recession Blues, support them and see them if you can cause these guys will be touring around D.C. during the summer.

Grown Ups

So yesterday between shitting my pants for finals and lurking on the internet I got my hands on the new Grown Ups full length that came out surprisingly early since it feels like yesterday when their demo came out, which was still ringing in my ears three months after my first listen. And shit their new full length is goooood. It's the first CD in a while I've been putting on repeat and is a good fun summer emo jamz cd. So basically the Grown Ups is this midwestern emo/ pop punk (Chicago/ Furnessville says their myspace) which have been getting alot of attention since their, well a real good band. They sound like basically like pop punk versions like Snowing (thanks chug life for hitting the nail on the head) or like Street Smart Cyclist and Algernon Cadwallader. There pretty tite and a good fast listen. They are also touring with Snowing and My Heart to joy on the east coast this summer so check them out.
